Context:
The Greytown Collaborative Education Initiative NPC was established to serve 11 schools (primary and secondary) in the Greytown area in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. About 180km from Durban and 70km from Pietermaritzburg, Greytown is part of the Umvoti municipality. This is primarily an agricultural area with little industry. According to the Municipality's IDP, in 2019/2020, 53% of people in the municipality were dependent on Grants and more than half of the total labour force is unemployed. In terms of the Provincial Deprivation Index (which considers Income Levels, Employment, Health, Education and the Living Environment), the Umvoti Municipality was ranked 39th out of the 52 Municipalities in the Province.
About the beneficiaries:
Tbe organisation follows the Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment Act, No. 53 of 2003 definition of beneficiaries. Only black children will benefit and 30% are female.
Vision:
To provide equitable access to excellent education for all children, especially those in rural and under-provisioned areas, through community outreach programmes.
Specifically they deliver:
Programmes that address needs in education provision, curriculum support, governance, whole school development and safety and security at schools and other educational institutions;
Educational enrichment, academic support, supplementary tuition and outreach programmes for the poor and needy;
Providing bursaries and holistic support for learners participating in studies through the Departments of Basic and Higher Education.
