Youth Unemployment in Africa

Due to Lack of Digital Skills

Empowering Africa’s Youth for a Digital Future

With 70% of sub-Saharan Africa’s population under the age of 30, the continent has the youngest population in the world. This presents a tremendous opportunity for growth if the next generation is equipped with the tools, education, and opportunities they need to thrive. However, youth unemployment remains a critical challenge, with only one in six young Africans holding wage-based jobs and many working in unsafe conditions.

Despite Africa’s expanding digital economy—forecasted to grow to $180 billion by 2025 and $712 billion by 2050—the continent faces significant barriers to fully realizing its potential. Internet access remains limited, with only 40% of Africans online compared to the global average of 66%. Additionally, unequal access to quality education, particularly for girls and those in rural areas, hampers the development of critical digital skills.

Bridging the Gap with Education and Training

To address these challenges, investments in digital infrastructure and education are essential. Schools need proper equipment, connectivity, and trained teachers to teach digital and soft skills effectively. Programs like technical and vocational education and training (TVET) are also critical. East African nations are leading by example, adopting regional qualification frameworks to improve TVET standards and better align training with labor market needs.

The NEET Program: A Digital Skills Enabler

South Africa’s NEET program is a promising initiative connecting young people to education and job opportunities in the digital economy. Through digital case management systems, young people are matched with opportunities while their progress is tracked. Training programs tailored to local needs will focus on STEAMIE subjects (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, innovation, and entrepreneurship), helping youth develop and apply their skills in real-world contexts.

A Call to Action for Africa’s Youth

Africa’s future lies in the hands of its young people, whose creativity and energy can drive innovation and transformation. By investing in digital skills, education, and opportunities, the continent can empower its youth to shape a brighter future for themselves and their communities. Programs like NEET and TVET show the way forward, emphasizing the need for collaboration across governments, schools, and industries to ensure Africa’s youth are ready to lead in a digital world
